Find an HSN code for your product

Search everyday product names or an exact code. Product guidance and classification descriptions appear separately.

What is an HSN code?

HSN means Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It provides a structured way to classify goods. The international Harmonized System is maintained by the World Customs Organization. A code identifies a classification; a product’s brand or everyday name alone may not identify the right entry.

How the 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-digit hierarchy works

Start with a chapter, then narrow to a heading and subheading. The international HS uses six-digit classifications; national tariff subdivisions add detail beyond that level. This finder preserves the eight-digit Indian reference entries and their prefixes.

How to find an HSN code for a product

  1. Identify what the product is made of, how it is made and its principal function.
  2. Search an everyday name to see whether a reviewed product guide exists. Compare its stated characteristics with your product.
  3. Read the full candidate description, its parent classifications and relevant notes. Do not select a code solely because a familiar word appears.
  4. Confirm the applicable classification and tax treatment against current official material before using the result for invoicing or a filing.

Search by product or by code?

An exact eight-digit search retrieves that seed record, including unpublished and historical entries. A reviewed product search explains supported candidates and distinctions. A tariff-word search retrieves reference descriptions, which are possible research starting points rather than classification recommendations.

If a product has not been reviewed, the finder says so. Record its composition, intended use, processing and technical characteristics before asking for classification assistance.

Why similar products can have different codes

The reviewed rice reference separates paddy, brown, milled and broken rice. The cotton-fabric references distinguish composition, weight, weave and finish. A shared everyday name does not remove those distinctions.

HSN, SAC and GST are different questions

HSN classifies goods; SAC is used for service classifications. This finder contains goods references, not a complete service-code directory. The GST registration guide separates goods and services when selecting classifications.

A classification does not establish one permanent GST rate. Applicable law, dates, conditions and the actual supply must be checked separately. No GST treatment in this release has passed independent tax-source verification. Expand a result’s details to inspect the original unverified seed values; do not use them as a current tax recommendation.

Common classification mistakes

  • Choosing a code from a product name without checking composition or function.
  • Treating a chapter or four-digit heading as a complete eight-digit answer.
  • Using an old entry without checking its status and applicable edition.
  • Assuming an unverified zero tax value proves an exemption.
  • Treating a search match or related product as an authoritative classification ruling.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a search result have no separate page?

The complete finder and publication decisions are separate. A record can be searchable while its description or supporting evidence still needs review.

Why are several codes shown for one product?

The everyday name may cover different materials, functions or forms. Use the reviewed distinctions to identify what still needs to be established.

Does a dated official reference mean a code is current?

No. Presence in a dated reference establishes only what that document contains. Current applicability remains unreconciled unless separately verified.

Can I search an older mobile-phone code?

Yes. Entries 85171211, 85171219 and 85171290 remain available as historical seed records. The finder identifies their evidenced deletion and does not recommend them as current classifications.
